Body Lifts with Dr. Bray

A body lift targets the abdominal area, buttocks, and thighs. Sun damage, aging, pregnancy, or significant weight fluctuations can result in sagging and loose skin. Oftentimes, this excess skin cannot be reduced with diet and exercise alone.

What is a Body Lift?

Body lifts are ideal for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight naturally or surgically, and  women who have been pregnant. Dr. Bray focuses on two techniques used for body contouring procedures: a circumferential body lift, and a Fleur de Lis.

A circumferential body lift is commonly performed when a patient has excess, overhanging skin that drapes around the entire body. Dr. Bray’s circumferential lift may also tighten deflated buttocks and outer thighs. The surgery results in a scar running across the lower abdomen as with a full tummy tuck, and then continues around the sides and upper buttock area to complete a full circle around the lower body.

A Fleur de Lis procedure is typically used after massive weight loss, where there has been significant skin stretching across the middle abdomen, and is characterized by a different scarring pattern than circumferential body lifts. With this method, there is an additional vertical scar in the middle of the abdomen, running from the pubic area upwards to the bottom of the breast bone. This vertical scar may be combined with a full tummy tuck scar or a circumferential one.

Muscle repair may be needed to achieve a firm abdomen. Dr. Bray will identify your anatomical needs to achieve your desired results.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?

Body lifts are ideal for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, naturally or surgically, and have loose skin extending around the flanks, outer thighs, and buttock areas that cannot be addressed with a conventional tummy tuck. Ideal candidates are those who are smoke-free, with limited alcohol consumption and in good overall health.

Body Lifts With Dr. Bray

Dr. Bray’s philosophy is holistic regarding plastic surgery. He considers the entire shape of the body, rather than individual parts. Meaning, his goal is always to create a symmetrical, proportional body. Moreover, since he aims for natural-looking physiques, he considers scar placement so that it may be concealable. In line with Dr. Bray’s holistic approach, he may suggest complementary surgeries to create a more balanced, youthful body.

Dr. Bray will assess your health records and perform a physical examination. Here, you will also discuss your desired shape and what combination of techniques will be needed to achieve your results. The goal for all his consultations is to create a unique surgical plan that details the body-contouring techniques Dr. Bray will employ. This may include muscle-repair procedures and a variety of liposuction techniques, including BodyTITE™.

Most of Dr. Bray’s patients receive a circumferential body lift, where the scar wraps around the body. For Fleur de Lis body lifts, the scarring travels from the breast bone to the pubic area. Regardless of the body lift technique, Dr. Bray always aims for the best-possible scar quality, in a location where they can be concealed by undergarments or bathing suits Post-surgery, Dr. Bray and his nursing staff will provide you with aftercare instructions and walk you through healing expectations.

Preparing for a Body Lift

Medical conditions, such as heart disease, hypertension, thyroid problems, diabetes or the regular use of certain medications might affect your surgery. If any of this applies to you, you should disclose all of these items in your medical questionnaire prior to your consultation with Dr. Bray.

No smoking icon

No smoking of any sort of nicotine, vape or marijuana products for at least 6 weeks before your procedure. Failure to do so might adversely affect your surgical outcome. We also advise not consuming alcohol at least a week prior to surgery.

Dish icon

Follow Dr. Bray’s instructions concerning diet, hygiene and medications. Before any kind of surgery, your stomach should be empty, which is why you should not eat or drink after midnight the day before the procedure.

Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes to allow easier change of clothes before and after surgery. Please arrive without any jewelry, makeup and nail polish on the day of the procedure. If you wear contact lenses, please switch them out for glasses.

Plan enough time for your recovery. Taking time off from work will be essential. The amount of necessary recovery time can vary dramatically between people depending on the extent of their surgery but also the physical demands of their occupation. Dr. Bray and his team will evaluate your personal situation and make recommendations regarding return to work.

In line with COVID-19 regulations, we have reassessed our cleaning and sterilization protocols. Upon arrival in our office we conduct symptom screenings with a questionnaire and check our patients’ temperature. We also require mask wearing for our staff and patients. COVID-19 testing before surgical procedures is mandatory in order to protect our staff. Please inform yourself regarding testing centers in your area and arrange for testing prior to your surgery.

We require a number of lab tests, diagnostic tests and medical evaluations leading up to your surgery. The nature of these tests will vary according to the procedure, your age, health, history, and other key health factors. Make sure to run all the necessary blood work and receive clearance before any surgical procedure. Necessary testing may change based on procedure, age, health, history and other factors.

It’s of utmost importance to follow all of your surgeon’s instructions regarding diet, supplements and medications. Stop drinking alcohol and smoking of any kind. Avoid exposure to sick people and quit taking blood thinning medications, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen and a number of supplements. Post-surgery preparations should be made, such as arranging transportation, getting time off from work, stocking up on food and anything else you will need post-surgery and making sure someone will stay with you during the first two days after the procedure.

Figure out what you are going to wear, follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding pre-surgery fasting and any other preparation measures. Go to bed early and get well rested before your big day. We also recommend getting your house in order and buying ice packs to help with swelling after the surgery.

FAQ

Dr. Bray places the incision based on the location of the problem areas. A circumferential lift’s incision is normally around the abdomen, hips, and back. During your consultations, Dr. Bray will provide more information on where and why it will be in a certain area.

Some of the risks include infection, swelling, seroma, skin contour irregularities, asymmetry, change in skin sensation, scarring, wound separation, fat necrosis, and recurrent looseness of the skin. That being said, Dr. Bray’s chief priority is the safety of his patients, and is very involved in the post-operative care process.

Afterwards, you will be placed in a compression garment to be worn for 4-6 weeks.  It is expected to experience some pain, bruising, and swelling for about a month following the procedure. It is important to not participate in any strenuous activities for about 6 weeks. However,  low-stress, routine activity can be resumed within a couple of days. Lastly, light walking within a day is beneficial to the healing process as it prevents blood clots. To aid in the recovery process, Dr. Bray will meet with you periodically to assess the wounds and any concerns.

The longevity of the results depends on multiple factors. The most notable is weight maintenance and age. Patients who maintain a consistent, healthy weight will see longer lasting results. Secondly is age, which changes some of the results over time.

Determining the cost of a body lift is very difficult because of the number of procedures with varying complexity that may be performed. It is best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bray to understand which procedures are required.

Dr. Bray’s office also offers payment and financing plans to accommodate varying incomes. Feel free to ask us how we can help you finance the procedures.

Yes, all procedures involving skin removal leave permanent scars. It may take a year or more for the scars to fade completely after your procedures. However, Dr. Bray makes every effort to ensure that the scars are located in concealed areas, and heal properly to become as inconspicuous as possible.
